The New Normal

Little J has been having a rough time lately. He is so sensitive to most medicines that whenever his thyroid medicine is upped to the full dose he gets sick. I guess I should have seen this coming. He also gets sick from the vaccines and even antibiotics.  We're getting there. Slowly but we're getting there. It's an adjustment for both of us.  I broke down in tears while talking to my mom today. I think just even admitting that he's old and he's not ever going to be the lively, rambunctious Little J he used to be was more than I could do. I know it. I know it deeper than any one could ever know it. This guy has been my buddy since he was less than an hour old and I rescued him from the great outdoors in the middle of the night because his cat mama didn't have the sense to stay indoors when she was in labor.  I knew he was a firecracker from the start. He was born on the 4th of July and I almost named him Firecracker. When I placed him and his sister in my arms to carry them back into my neighbors home where they belonged, he immediately started climbing up me....screaming the entire time. He curled up in my neck, and I think at that moment, whether I wanted to or not, he was going to live his life with me. He was only the first one to choose me.  He's been my buddy since that day almost 17 years ago. Almost 17 years of love and feistiness  and I wouldn't have it any other way.  But, my Little Mr. 4th Of July is losing some of that fire.  He's getting old. So we get used to a new normal.  We make it a point to love each day we live and make the most of it. Today is a good day. Whatever tomorrow brings, we deal with it tomorrow. I don't know how else to do it. I took this picture of him this morning. The fact that his is laying on the bed and not hiding in his safe place in the closet made me happy.  The fact that he is rolling around purring and playing to the camera (yes my cats do that) made me very happy. Yes...today is a good day.

And of course, I couldn't resist my TuffyBear. I have to remember that this is an adjustment for him too. He's use to his Bub running and playing with him. He's seemed a little lost the past few weeks without the constant companionship of Little J. He's been far more clingy to me than usual.  TuffyBear was the 2nd one to choose me. My friend Natalie gave me pick of the litter when her cat had kittens almost 11 years ago. I was hoping for an even tempered, calm cat this time around. One that would tolerate Little J's in your face attitude and would maybe help settle him down. Natalie showed up with a carrier full of kittens. Most were being quiet and calm, but one little guy was very loud and demanding. He was stepping all over his siblings. I picked him up so that I could get a better look at the other ones. As I was oohing and awwing over all the sweet babies, the sweetest of them all fell asleep in my arms. I was his, and he was determined that I was going to be his forever Mom. When I got him inside, he took to Little J immediately.  Instant buddies.  I wanted to name him Love Bug because aside from that initial first impressions, he was the sweetest, most loving thing I had ever seen.  As things usually go, fate had a different plan and he did end up naming himself.  My oldest niece came over to see the new baby and while she was playing with him, she said...."Man, you're a Tough Guy."  It stuck. And though he was the sweetest thing ever, that name was going to become more appropriate than I could ever imagine.  It changed over the months from Tough Guy to TuffyBear because he seemed more like a big teddy bear than a tough guy. It would take all day to describe all the ways that cat has lived up to the name he found for himself. Starting with his first near death experience. When he was a little over a year old, he chewed through the cord on a window fan while it was on. He was very badly injured and even the vet did not expect he would survive. But survive he did. For a week, we got up every 2 hours and forced special high calorie food down him with a syringe. He came out of it with part of his tongue missing and a huge scar on his leg where the electricity exited his body. The ordeal changed him. He became very scared and skittish and very endeared to his Forever Mom. To this day, if I am home, he is near me and almost always touching me in some way. Leaning against me if I am sitting on the couch, laying on or next to me, his paw touching my leg, or arm. I am his most definitely. Whether or not that incident had anything to do with the biggest challenge in his life is not known. What came years later, was the hardest, most emotionally torturing thing I had to ever deal with. I'll save that for another post though.

April Showers

Rainy day and yet I rather enjoy it. The windows are open, slight breeze blowing in every now and then, birds chirping, squirrels chattering. I do love the sounds of Spring.  A few weeks from now the flowers will be blooming and I will once again be hitting the great outdoors in search of the perfect photo ops. Have I mentioned that I love Spring?
I spent the day yesterday with the cutest 6 year old in the world.  Her parents had to make a trip to see the Easter Bunny...last minute stuff, etc. We made a few Easter Cards and had portraits done. I think I should mention that she showed up rocking some pretty 80's attire. Leg warmers? My goodness hadn't seen those in over 20 years. She was simply adorable and definitely has a rock star attitude.  Our little impromptu photo session has given my some good practice working with digital backgrounds. Since my in studio portraits from now on will consist of only digital....I need all the practice I can get.

Veggie Update

Still doing good. I did have a chicken salad sandwich last night though. I found a can of chicken in the cupboard and didn't want to throw it out.  So...1 hit on the veggie living in 3 months. Doing better than I thought.  These next few weeks I am concentrating on clearing out the freezer and cupboards of all of this stock that I have.  I am so bad about planning menus and making lists. I end up with 9 cans of something I barely ever use.  If something is on sale...I tend to pick up more than I need.  But...my ultimate goal is to go 80Raw this summer. That is...to have 80 percent of my diet be raw whole unprocessed foods.  I know that I love icecream and that for me....smoothies are a good replacement for that...so I do intend to stock a bunch of frozen fruits. Most of the raw sites say that since fruit is flash frozen after harvesting...that it is technically raw.  YAY.  Of course, I can't do raw milk or yogurt...so thats where the 20 percent comes in. It'll be a challenge thats for sure. But honestly...I  like raw veggies way better than cooked and I can't eat cooked fruit at all so I might not be as hard as I think.  Raw foods/whole foods are so much better for you. Cooking foods takes some of the nutrients out of the food, and the more that go into your body...the better it is for you. I also read that your body has to kick up the metabolism to digest whole, raw foods. Bonus right?

Anyway...today for dinner...I took a bag of frozen Spinach Stuffed Rigatoni that I bought months ago at Aldi, layered  it with a large can of crushed tomatoes, some Tastefully Simple Tomato, Basil and Garlic Pesto, and topped it with some shredded mozzarella. Baked it at 350 for 40 minutes. Easy veggie lasagna.  Turned out very good. No pictures I'm sorry to say...I just couldn't wait to try it I guess ;)

Vegetarian Orange Chicken

Orange Chicken from Panda Express is one of my favorite things.  But being meat free means no trips for me. When I seen that my grocer now stocks Panda Express sauces, I decided to give it the ol' homemade try.

First take these...cut the nuggets in half to make nice bite size pieces. Use just enough Orange Sauce
to coat, and then bake as directed on packaging.
Then take some of these...whatever frozen stirfry veggies that you like and cook according to package.
I added in some of these to absorb the extra moisture from the frozen veggies.

When done....add the veggies to a bowl...
add in the nuggets....

And you have a nice bowl of tasty Orange Chik'n. You can even add in a little extra sauce at this point but beware...it is very strong stuff. Does it taste JUST like Panda Express? NOOOOOO but it is pretty good and it's very low in fat and calories. And VERY easy to make.

For I Will Yet Praise Him.

Two steps forward, one step back. We still get there, just a little slower.  For the past few years, I've been dealing with health issues with one or the other of my cats. I'll post a future blog about the miracle of my TuffyBear, but today I want to focus on Little J.  Little J is 16 and a half years old. He will be 17 on the 4th of July. Little J is actually short for Little Mr. Fourth Of July.  For the past year and a half, Little J has been slowly showing his age.  Trip after trip to the vet has resulted in very little information and a lot of frustration on the parts of both myself and the vet.  Test after test has failed to reveal what was going on with him.  He showed many of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, but his T-Levels were always low and never at a level that would suggest a presence of the disease let alone a necessity for a course of treatment. Yesterday, I took Little J in for another round of testing. I had been in an anxious state of worry for a week wondering what this visit would bring. Little J is the worst I have ever seen him. I think I have been praying for Little J more than I have ever in the past.  To many times to count, I would stop what I was doing and say a quick prayer. A prayer for peace, for understanding, for resolution.  Mostly I prayed that God would give me the strength to do whatever was necessary for Little J.  I worried. I would like to say that I placed it in God's hands and left it there, but I couldn't. I'm weak. Sometimes I would snatch it back and work on it some more and give it up to Him again.  But my God is a gracious and wonderous God and does not hold that against me.  Today, when the vet called to give me the news that FINALLY Little J was testing in definite levels and we could start following that and treating it....I felt something in me go absolutely weak. I was happy. I was elated. And yet...I could not keep myself from crying.  I felt like it was God showing me that He is still in control, still in charge, no matter how much I snatch back those worries.  Tonight, I have a sense of peace. Tonight, I find myself stopping in the middle of doing something, closing my eyes, and thanking Him. Repeatedly.  And I know, that no matter what comes, no matter the course, I know He will be in control.
“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (Psalm 42:5).

Baby Portraits-Posed or Unplanned

When it comes to portraits...I am always at a loss to choose between posed "professional looking " portraits like the one below...

or capturing those quiet, unplanned moments.
Each has it's merits, no doubt. But, I can never choose which works best. Until I can, I think I'll just make it a practice to shoot both.
